TWIN BED MADE INTO A BENCH STEP #2

This one is so eazy. The hard part is to find these frames cheep. This one cost me 20 bucks.I took the foot board and cut two pices out of it to made the side arms. I decided to make the sides 12 and a half inches wide.I like this size because it will have a good bench seat added.I took the head board and drilled two 3/8 in. holes to put in dowel pluges in it to attached side railes.I took the side side railes and drilled the 3/8 in. hole in them to match the hole in head board. I put wood glue on the dowels and attached the side arms to head board. To make the bench stronger I also went to Lowes and picked up some 1and 1/2 in. L brackets for extra support.I let this set for two days so that the glue sets. These pictures show where we are know.i was going to add the seat and my wife came in and suggested to also make this benck a storage bench. So instead of just adding a seat I will added a seat with hinges that will lift upto have enterance to storage compartment.Well check out pictures of were we are so far and should be able to see finished bench in #3.

redoing old furniture part #2

Well it took a extra day to stain because it rained ,I don not stain any thing in the rain because of the moisture in the air .I went to Lowes and picked out a can of Minwax paint called Penetrates,Stains,Seals. I first checked to made sure there was no dust on tht wood .I took the paint and mixed it good. With a 2in. brush and a clean cloth I put on the first coat. After 4 hours I added a second coat. Then after an other 5 hours I added one more coat. This is when I checked it that I  had the color I was looking for. After 24 hours I added a coat of clear lacquer not to heavy.I use spray cans for this.I wanted a slite shine so I used semigloss.Well here it is a old dresser from the forties at 20.00 and a littly work. Not bad hay. See Ya Dave

redoing old furniture part #1

Hay every one I went to a auction the other night and only payed 20.00 dollars for this old dresser. Well the first thing I did was to repair all the wood parts that were bad.Loose boards-top was warped and the rollers on legs were rusty so I put them in oil to soak.In order to fix warped top I put a pan of water in side and created steam .I then clamped the top after adding wood glue. This made the top st rate.I let the glue dry for 24 hours. Now the fun starts I tried something new this Professional strength Turf - Strip made by CROWN ,this is some great paint remover. You spray it on and I waited 10min. and scraped it off. This is the best I have ever used.Well I let this set for two days to dry out.O by the way make sure you have a well ventilated area to strip paint. After that comes the sanding and to do a good job there is a lot of it.I first used a 80grit-then a 100grit and ended with a 150 grit. The next important part is to make sure you clean all sanding dust off. I take a old paint brush to sweep the small cracks and then I use a tack rag. Then to make sure I will vacuum it.Well it is all sanded and ready for stain. Will stain in the morning and show what it looks like in after noon. See Ya Dave

Make a bench out of bed head post

So cool, I go out to goodwill stores and yard sales and try to find head and foot boards for 10.00 each.In order to make a good bench you need to get both pieces. This is what make the bench special.I take the foot board and cut it to the size seat I want to have. I like to make my seats 20 1/2 in. wide.I think thisgives the bench a good dimension. Then I go to Lowes and get 6 -1in.by 1 1/2in. by 8 foot long.I will cut these to make my seat slats.I also get one 1in. by 6in. by 8 foot long. This will be cut to use as the front lip for seat.I will take a dowel rod 1/2in. and cut it in to 2in. pices. It takes 14 to make a bench.I found by using these dowel pins it makes the bench stronger.I mark and drill my holes 1 1/8 deep this makes room for the wood glue to work. Also I only use water proof glue whitch is good if you plan to put your bench outside.I have 2 pictures of benches I made one is a queen and the other is a twin.Total cost of each bench is about 25.00.cool ha.Need any help making one let me know

Great Tip Rust remover

What a great item a few weeks ago at a yard sale I found some old sockets made by craftman, they were realy rusted up.I tryed several rust cleaners and nothing worked. Then in my work shop I saw this bottle of Lime A-Way.I was about to throw the sockets in the trash. But I found an old bowl and put in the sockets then covered them with lime-a-way.I let them set for 24hr. and low and behold when I washed them off with some soapy water they came out great. The only thing you need to do is wear rubber gloves to protect your hands.

Find of the day

I went to a estate auction and found this great dresser. It is from the middle fourths. All I had to do was reset the bottom wood in the draws,so I reset them and put some liquid nail in corners.By using liquid nail you don't split the wood with the use of a nail.I then shot one coat of la quire and boy did it come out great. Not bad for a 25.00 investment.

Fun Pictures

Hay here is a cheep way to make cool pictures. Well what I do is go to yard sales and find picture frames ,but I never pay more then a dollar for one. What I did last time I found some I stopped at Walmart and checked there calendar section and found an out dated one for .10 .Well think of it 12 pictures for .10. Well I put 3 together ,so check them out. Let me know what you think.Hay that is not bad 1.10 cost for each picture.

Redone Weathervane

As you can see by pictures that the Balls were weathered and broken and not repairable. So my first step was to clean the metal. I used 20 grit sand paper so I did not want to take away from the orignal texture of metal. After that I washed it down with water mixed with some Joy liquid soap. I put aside and let dry for 24 hours. Then I sparyed with black flat out door paint. You need to take your time with spray paint so you dont get paint runs. I put on 3 light coats.I let the painted parts set for 24 hours. Then I added two coats of laqure. This took care of the metal parts.Had to figure out how to replace balls.I went to Home Depot found nothing. Then tryed Lowes still nothing. What to do. Then one night I went to a auction and low and behold there thy were. A seller had yard ornament that were made out of a hard plastic. So I was able to get them cheep anly 2.00 each. The next day I was able to drill 1/2 in. holes in them to fit post.Well let me know what you think. The total cost for this project was 22.50.
